A Robe MiniMe starred alongside Marc Lottering playing Scrooge in Lara Foot’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, which was recently staged at the Baxter Theatre, at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Patrick Curtis, Production Manager at the Baxter Theatre Centre needed a fixture to assist in creating a phantom effect … and spoke to Robert Izzett from Robe’s South African distributor, DWR Distribution.
He wanted to project a ghost-like image that could zip around the set … to which Robert suggested the MiniMe!
Patrick thought it was a very well-priced moving head projector that would be perfect for the job ... and so it passed the audition!
The MiniMe arrived a few days before the technical set-up at the Baxter, and with the assistance of Gerda and Philip Kruger, lighting designers and technical directors from Philip Kruger Consulting, the project was quickly up and running.
“We were very impressed with the brightness of the projected image,” said Curtis.
The ‘ghosts’ were created using simple hand-drawn black and white images which were scanned and uploaded to the MiniMe, and then faded in and out on various parts of the scenery. “This suited the style of the production and was very successful,” said Patrick.
With a story filled with romance, fantasy and generosity and, with artists such as Shaleen Surtie-Richards, Andrew Buckland, Christo Davids and a full children’s choir, the Cape Town audiences relished the nostalgia and drama of this timeless tale brought to life.
Patrick is looking forward to using the MiniMe again, this time utilising more of its flexibility and features.
