Lighting Designer Dave Gibbon and Production Manager Richard Baker jointly decided to invest in eight Robe Spot 250 XT moving lights. These immediately went into action on the current Hadley vs. Cox UK theatre tour, which is completely sold out and adding dates as we go to press.

With the tour approaching, the pair wanted a number of ‘specials’ to help create memorable moments in the show and to augment the house lighting rigs that were being as the basic backbone of the daily lighting design.

“We wanted a versatile, bright, reliable, easy to rig and cost effective moving light option”

 explains Gibbon. With the length of the tour and the conviction that there would be a lot more future work for the fixtures, they struck a deal with Robe UK’s David Linger.

“The units have been invaluable for adding those unique touches and flourishes to the show”

 states Gibbon, who uses them for gobo projections, beam work, and dynamic colour and movement chases. He’s also touring four silk banner drops, hung at the rear of stage, to create depth and upstage interest, with which the Robes work in conjunction. The basic ethos of the ‘specials’ concept is to ensure there’s also elements of visual continuity for the Hadley vs, Cox performance.

The Spot 250s, where possible, are rigged with four on the house front truss and four on the floor - to light the silk legs. Some venues – e.g. Basingstoke’s Anvil Theatre – also have Robe fixtures in-house, and where possible, Gibbon also adds these into his show for the night. He uses his own Avo Pearl 200 console to control the Robes.

Gibbon had only actually used Robes once – on a Nike fashion show - before making the investment. However this was enough to convince him that they were the right fixtures for the job!

His favourite Spot 250 features include having 2 sets of glass gobos, the unit’s overall light weight, brightness and the quality optics. He’s also impressed with the strobe effects, which rock out during a stonking rendition of Thin Lizzy‘s classic hit "The Boys Are Back In Town".

Tony Hadley and Peter Cox, who reached the dizzying pinnacles of their initial stardom back in the 1980s, with glam pop bands Spandau Ballet and Go West respectively, have achieved phenomenal success with their current revival format. During 2003, they played over 70 live shows in the UK alone, and this year that number will easily be exceeded.
