The fourth Lollapalooza Chile event was staged in the capital Santiago and attended by over 100,000 music fans at O’Higgins Park, who enjoyed a variety of musical action over six stages and two days.
Lighting equipment provider Producciones Órbita - for the stages and general park-wide environmental lighting– made the most of their recently purchased Robe ROBIN Pointes moving light fixtures.
Local Lighting Director Felipe Serey created a production design and adapted the various artists’ plots on most of the stages, based around the design of each night’s headline band.
“This is one of the highest profile music festivals in the world, and for us in Chile, it is one of the most important ones of the year,” elucidated Felipe. “Lollapalooza 2014 was a challenging project due to the many overnight changeovers needed to accommodate each band’s requirements”.
The Pointes were part of the fixed rig on some stages, while on others they were added at the request of LDs.
LD Steve Rose from French rockers Phoenix, who works for Felix Lighting in the USA, asked for 16 x Pointes that were rigged on a truss above the LED screen in the middle of the Claro Stage.
Felix Lighting acquired their 48 x Pointes just before Steve began his tour with Phoenix. “When I saw them on the demo, I was really surprised! They are fantastic! I haven’t had the chance of playing with these ‘toys‘ yet, but I’m really looking forward to using them here,” he said before the show … in which he used them as powerful beam effects one moment and as band key lighting the next.
Another band utilising Pointes in their performance was Red Hot Chili Peppers, with 12 fixtures located upstage behind the band also on the Claro Stage.
“It was good to have the Pointes here … I have used them on many other shows and they have always worked well!” said LD Scott Holthaus.
The LG G2 Stage had 16 Pointes installed permanently over both days. This was located inside the Movistar Arena and dedicated to EDM acts in this Lollapalooza edition, featuring performances by Axwell and Kid Cudi among many others.
Felipe added, “Without any doubt, incorporating Pointes into this stage’s lighting design was a wise move. The fixtures met the needs of each LD as they are so versatile and can be used as wash, beam or spot … with great speed and optics. The results were spectacular!”
Maverick English electronic rockers New Order also had eight Pointes in their show, which were used as effects lighting behind the band on the PlayStation Stage.
Stage structures, trusses, towers and other metal structures and ground supports for the event were provided by SuperStage, with Lotus Producciones co-ordinating the general event and site production.
“It has been wonderful to see the huge development of Lollapalooza Chile in four years with Lotus, and we are very proud to be a part of it,” says Producciones Órbita director Alicia Lawner.
Órbita’s crew worked 8 hour shifts day and night, with six technicians, four riggers and one programmer per stage. They also provided 3D pre-programming and visualisation facilities so LDs could get a head start on their shows.
Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell - best known as the lead singer of alt rockers Jane’s Addiction - was in Chile watching the performances and the results of this roll out of his hugely successful concept.
