Inspired in self-isolation: Christopher Bauder

With Covid-19 lockdowns worldwide and health authorities urging people to self-isolate and practice social distancing on a massive scale as part of an enormous effort to #FlattenTheCurve of this global pandemic … we are reaching out to industry friends, colleagues, associates, partners, etc., and asking them to share their #StayAtHome and #QuarantineAndChill activities with us during this extraordinary time.

Christopher is the creative director and founder of design studio WHITEvoid and motor winch manufacturing company KINETIC LIGHTS. He travels the world creating amazing art installation pieces using light and various ingenious technologies, and designs / programs special lighting and visuals shows for a diversity of clients.

Robe: Where are you right now?

Christopher: Where I live and work … in Berlin, Germany.

Robe: How are you spending time whilst isolating / on lockdown?

Christopher: I am still going to our studio every day to do as much work as is possible under the circumstances, but I am mostly alone. All my co-workers are in their home offices currently and working remotely.

Robe: What’s the most creative thing you’re able to do whilst in isolation?

Christopher: I finally started to make some electronic music! This was always a dream of mine, but I never had the time to get it started. I am also working on a new concept for a light art show and exhibition.

Robe: Are you looking after anyone else during the Covid-19 crisis? Like neighbours or others in the family?

Christopher: Well I have 30 employees, so it’s already quite a challenge to get them organized and provide them with all important information.

We keep them updated about the Covid-19 situation and how they can organize themselves best with the current social distancing rules and restrictions in place. We have also organized protective masks and other PPE for them.

Of course, I also keep in touch with my family, but they mostly live in other cities or countries, so it’s not possible to meet in person, unfortunately.

Robe: Has anyone particularly inspired you since this crisis started?

Christopher: It is not directly a person, but I really appreciate what the German state and government are able to do for the people in this situation.

I am very grateful for the social and financial system we have in place that helps and supports people in many different ways at the moment.

Concerning the treatment of the virus infection directly or second level problems like supporting our economy and people’s personal cash flow … I always took this system I live in for granted, BUT this crisis really shows what we pay our high taxes for … and how they are used for good and widely beneficial schemes in times of need.

Robe: What has been your favourite book / movie / Netflix or TV series / viral video / games / music?

Christopher: I really enjoyed watching the documentary "Alpha GO" about AI challenging and ultimately defeating the world’s best (board game) GO player (It was developed by DeepMind Technologies and later acquired by Google).

It felt like a symbolization of the current situation.

Even when losing against an almighty opponent … you can still keep your dignity and learn from your defeat to grow and become stronger.

Robe: What’s the first thing you’d like to do when we are through this crisis?

Christopher: Travel, travel, travel the world and create many, many new and exciting shows with a rich mix of different people from diverse cultures … all together in one big team!

Robe: What will the world be like after the lockdown?

Christopher: The world will not be the same, at least not for a while. But every struggle or loss is also a chance to rethink your position and change your direction if you are open to something new.

It might not be better than what you lost, but it could be exciting and new and probably also as good in the end!
