Notes for MAC OS X users: Rule 1: Please right-click and open context menu of downloadable file. Click "Download Linked File as ...", don't try "Download Linked File ..." and type any name and location for the file. The file will be downloaded with your name plus extension .zip Rule 2: Right-Click on downloaded zipped file and "Open With ..." a MACOSX compatible software called ZIPit. Don't open with the default Archive Utility, which comes with MACOSX 10. Now it works and you are getting your expected .gz file.
